This searchable database is provided as an aid to researchers and avian conservationists interested in matching their interests and expertise with research and monitoring needs identified in the PIF Bird Conservation Plans for physiographic areas or states of the United States. It should also be useful to bird conservation coordinators, as a tool for managing research and monitoring needs for their areas or for comparing them with needs in other areas. This database includes research and monitoring needs identified in those plans currently available on the Web. The database and its version number will be updated periodically as new plans are published.

This search form will allow you to search the database in a variety of ways. You can conduct broad searches of the database for all the research needs identified in a particular PIF Region, for example, by selecting the Region of interest from the Region list. For all research needs for a particular species, e.g., ovenbird, select "ovenbird" from the species list. For all research needs on a particular topic, enter a keyword that best describes the topic, e.g., "migration." This will help you locate all research needs with the term "migration" in the title, keyword list, or project description associated with each need. Or conduct a narrower search by making multiple choices in a field or making choices in multiple fields. Beware of using so many search words that you inadvertently deny yourself access to some information you may want. It may be productive to start with a broader search (e.g. search only on a particular species or keyword) and then narrow the search if the results are too inclusive.

Pre-Defined Keywords: (Select keywords from this list that you would like to search for. Selecting words from this list will search only the equivalent keyword list field in the database. For broader searches, see below (User-Defined Keywords section). If you select multiple keywords, the search will retrieve only records containing ALL of the keywords selected. To select more than one keyword, press the CTRL key down and click left mouse button on each of the keyword you wish to select. If you want to undo your selection, press the CTRL and click left mouse button on highlighted keyword to be removed.) Return to Search Form

User-Defined Keyword(s): (You may enter a word or phrase. If you wish to search more broadly across other fields or wish to search for other keywords or phrases not in the above list, then use this User-Defined Keyword search. Variations on a particular word may have been entered (e.g. predator or predators or predation), so it may be productive to enter a portion of a word in order to select all options. In other words, you can enter "preda" and that would select all of the above-mentioned words in the search. If you are going to enter a keyword in both field #1 and field #2, you must select either “and” or “or” as an operator. In order to search for a particular species or a geographic location (nation, region, physiographic area, state, province), you must use the designated fields below. This Keyword section will search the title, keywords, and short description fields in the database for these words/phrases.) Return to Search Form

Species: (Select species from this list. If you select multiple species, the search will retrieve only records containing ALL of the species selected. If you are searching for all the records of multiple species, conduct a separate search for each species. To select more than one species press the CTRL key down and click left mouse button on each of the species you wish to select. If you want to undo your selection, press the CTRL and click left mouse button on highlighted species to be removed.) Return to Search Form
