PIF Continental (U.S. & Canada) Watch List Species
Research & Monitoring Needs
Welcome to the Partners in
Flight (PIF) Continental (U.S. & Canada) Watch List Species Research
and Monitoring Needs resource! We have compiled some
basic information about each species on the Watch List identified in the
PIF North American Landbird Conservation Plan (Rich et al. 2004),
including:
-
common & scientific name
-
global conservation status (IUCN 2004 Red List)
-
national-level conservation status (Coverage by
Migratory Bird Treaty Act; U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA); national
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Birds of Conservation Concern; Canadian
Species at Risk Act (SARA); and Mexican Normas Oficiales Mexicanas (NOM) para la Proteccion Ambiental (Official
Mexican Standards for Environmental Protection)
-
distribution (AOU 1998)
-
key reference(s)
-
general habitat associations (AOU 1998); and
-
a list of research and monitoring needs gleaned from a
variety of sources.
This is NOT intended to be a comprehensive list of
published research/monitoring needs for these species. Our primary
sources were the Partners
in Flight Research and Monitoring Needs Database, which lists
research/monitoring needs identified in the Partners
in Flight Bird Conservation Plans, National Action Needs for Canadian Landbird Conservation, other PIF sources where information
was missing from the database, the Birds of North America accounts, and a
few other sources of species accounts (e.g., U. S. Fish & Wildlife
Species Status Assessments and the USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research
Center accounts). We have cited Recovery Plans for listed species
(U.S. Endangered Species Act) where we were able to get the citations but
did not "mine" them for additional research needs.
We provide a Bibliography (References) with
complete citations for all of the publications listed, except the PIF
Bird Conservation Plans which are available on the PIF website.
Where we were able, we have included links in the Bibliography to
resources available on the internet. Please keep in mind that some
of these web links (especially those for PDFs) take some time to download,
and are maintained by others. Although the Birds of North America
(BNA) accounts are not available free on the web, the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology has made them available for a very reasonable annual
subscription. Click here
for information about that BNA resource. We hope you will find this
website to be useful.
The Watch List species list below is organized, like the
PIF North American Landbird Conservation Plan (Rich et al. 2004), by
reasons for continental concern. For a Watch List species list in alphabetical
order, click here. For a Watch List species list in taxonomic order,
