 White-throated Swift

Common Name:  White-throated Swift (WTSW)

Scientific Name:  Aeronautes saxatalis

Global/Continental Conservation Status:  Not on IUCN 2004 Red List

National-level Conservation Status:  Nothing other than coverage by Migratory Bird Treat Act

Key Reference(s):  BNA No. 526 (Ryan and Collins 2000)

Distribution:  Breeds from extreme s-c British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, and sw South Dakota south through the Pacific and sw states (including the Channel Islands off California) to s Baja California (a questionable sight record of nesting on Guadulupe Island in 1892, unreported there since 1922), east to w Nebraska, ne and c New Mexico, and w Texas (to Val Verde County), and south through the interior of Mexico to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.  Winters from c California , c Arizona , and, rarely, s New Mexico (casually further north) south to the limits of the breeding range in Middle America (AOU 1998).

Habitat Associations:  Primarily mountainous country, especially near cliffs and canyons, foraging over forest and open situations; nests in cliffs, occasionally in buildings and on seacliffs (Subtropical and Temperate zones) (AOU 1998).

PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  Mo2 (BBS trends have very low precision)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct species-specific surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc); (similar) Breeding/roosting site monitoring - Test and evaluate monitoring protocols for WTSW at breeding sites ( Colorado ); conduct long-term daily counts at known breeding and roosting sites to improve trend determination (Canadian Action Plan)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct Mexican species-specific surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Identify the causes for population decline in WTSW ( Colorado )
  • Status assessments - Determine population status of WTSW (BNA); periodically assess population status in Canada (CanAP)
  • Confirm possible breeding site of WTSW in British Columbia (Canadian Action Plan)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Determine whether habitat around colonies and/or nest sites is adequate for WTSW ( Colorado )
  • Information on intra-familial relationships, food habitats, range & significance of vocalizations, reproductive phenology, nest-site requirements, male-female roles, nesting details, development of young, nest spacing, nest & roost site fidelity, dispersion, molts, plumages (BNA)

Effects of Human Development/Disturbance

  • Effects of recreational activities on cliff-nesting birds (including WTSW) ( New Mexico )

Migration

  • Identify the key migratory routes, stopover areas, behaviors, and habitats of WTSW ( Colorado , BNA)

Wintering

  • Identify principal wintering areas for WTSW in Mexico , Central, or South America ( Colorado , BNA)
