Habitat Associations:  Chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and brushy areas, primarily in lowlands; locally in suburbs with dense shrub layer (AOU 1998).

Source(s) of Research/monitoring Needs:  Oregon/Washington Bird Conservation Plan (in Westside Lowlands & Valleys); California Bird Conservation Plan; BNA No. 654 (Geupel and Ballard 2002); PIF Monitoring Needs document (Partners in Flight Science Committee 2004)

PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  ** (Long-term population trend monitoring considered adequate, but some issues (e.g., bias) may not be accounted for)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – NOTE:  Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides acceptable data at the continental level (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Improve the BBS (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Third priority monitoring action – Conduct new winter surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Information on Wrentit population trends for Sierra Nevada, southern grasslands, & Los Angeles ranges ( California )

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • More Information on Wrentit Habitat Requirements - Effects of understories dominated by native vs. exotic species for priority species including WREN (Oregon/Washington); Determine the most suitable ratio of cover types for priority species including WREN (Oregon/Washington);  Information on specific habitat characteristics that promote higher density populations (California); Identify the territory size and habitat features that determine occupancy for priority species including WREN (Oregon/Washington)
  • Study nesting ecology and habitat relationships of WREN (Oregon/Washington)
  • Other Information on WREN Life History - Evaluate life history traits for heretability (BNA); Determine factors affecting different molt strategies in Hatch Year WRENs (BNA); Function of song variation & other aspects of vocal repertoire (BNA)

Effects of Human Development/Disturbance

  • see needs under "Landscape"

Landscape

  • Information on Effects of Fragmentation on WREN - Information on mechanisms by which landscape fragmentation & urban proximity affect WREN populations ( California ); Information on associations between WREN population viability and landscape parameters (connectivity & patch size) (BNA)

Predation

  • Identify predators of WREN adults & nests; determine nest predation rates (especially in the Central Valley of California)(BNA)

Nest Parasitism

  • Determine nest parasitism rates (especially in the Central Valley of California) (BNA)

Genetics/Taxonomy/Systematics

  • More information on genetics & taxonomy in WREN (BNA)
