RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct Caribbean species-specific surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc); (similar) Implement monitoring of WCPI throughout range but especially in Bahamas, Cuba, Dominican Republic & Jamaica (BNA)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct species-specific surveys in the U.S. (PIF Monitoring Needs doc); (similar) Estimate population of WCPI in Florida ; develop information on nesting locations from Key Vaca south thru Key West (BNA)
  • High priority candidate for rapid status assessment (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Comprehensive geographic study of WCPI in Bahamas to identify important nesting and feeding sites for future protection (BNA)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Factors influencing cessation of nesting and more information on termination of parental care (BNA)
  • Information on patterns & timing of molts (BNA)

Effects of Human Development/Disturbance

  • Effects of power lines on WCPI survivorship in Florida (BNA)

Migration

  • Determine WCPI migration patterns throughout range (BNA)

Wintering

  • Determine WCPI winter habitat requirements throughout range (BNA)

Demographics

  • Information on adult survival & factors influencing adult survival (BNA)

Habitat Restoration

  • Develop methods & recommendations for restoration of nesting and feeding habitats (BNA)
