RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)
Monitoring
- Priority
monitoring action – Improve the Breeding Bird Survey (PIF Monitoring
Needs doc)
- Specific
VIWA population status & trend questions - Determine population status and trends
for VIWA, specific to mountain mahogany habitats in Nevada (Nevada);
Address the conflicting opinions on the population status of VIWA (we
need better estimates of population trends or overall health of
populations (BNA); Additional monitoring required on Montane Shrub
species in
New Mexico
including VIWA (
New Mexico
)
- Basic
information on VIWA breeding range is not yet complete (BNA)
- See
needs under “Effects of Human Development …”
Habitat
Needs/Ecology/Life History
- Determine
minimum shrub canopy cover (threshold level) needed to support viable
populations of VIWA (
Colorado
)
- Do
a comparison of VIWA reproductive success in the range of habitats it
uses (BNA)
Effects
of Management Practices
- Effects
of prescribed burning in mountain shrubland on priority species
including VIWA (
Colorado
)
Effects
of Human Development/Disturbance
- Identify
areas of concern where impacts from humans have a negative impact on
VIWA (
Colorado
)
Migration
- Information
on VIWA ecology during migration, as well as timing along route in
Mexico (BNA)
Wintering
- Identify
principal wintering areas for VIWA (
Colorado
)
- Information
on VIWA ecology in wintering range (BNA)
Demographics
- Conduct
demographic studies on VIWA (
Colorado
)
