RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct species-specific surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct new winter surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs)
  • Intensive statewide survey to identify breeding colony sites (California PIF plan)
  • see needs under "Wintering"

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Use & depletion of food resources near breeding colonies; measures of extent and character of foraging habitats; habitat selection mechanisms; and relative value of alternative foraging habitats (BNA)
  • Breeding ecology of males (degree of polygyny, participation of first-year males, relationship of territoriality to breeding densities of males and females) (BNA)

Effects of Management Practices

  • Determine benefits/ drawbacks of various agricultural regimes on birds (including TRBL) ( California )
  • Identify & implement research relevant to management of TRBLs ( California )
  • Effects of land use characteristics on TRBL reproductive success (BNA)

Predation

  • Individual TRBL behavior and population response to predators (BNA)

Wintering

  • Distribution & abundance, resource use, and survival of wintering TRBL ( California ; BNA)

Demographics

  • Long-term studies to document annual adult & first-year survival, fidelity to breeding sites (BNA)
  • monitor reproductive success at representative sample of TRBL colonies ( California )

Genetics/Taxonomy/Systematics

  • Taxonomic status of southern California population of TRBL (BNA)
