RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct South American surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct migration monitoring (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Third priority monitoring action – Conduct species-specific surveys, noting that some exist in some areas (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Better STKI Population Estimates for Gulf Coast - Gather population estimates for STKI along East Gulf Coastal Plain flood plains (East Gulf Coastal Plain); Determine number of breeding pairs of STKI in West Gulf Coastal Plain (TARP - West Gulf Coastal Plain)
  • Information on interchange among subpopulations of STKI (BNA)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Determine what is limiting populations of STKI and why STKI nest on the edge of openings near human habitation?  (TARP - West Gulf Coastal Plain)
  • Information on post-breeding dispersal of STKI; expansion of our knowledge of STKI ecology & conservation needs (BNA)

Effects of Management Practices

  • Evaluate effectiveness of existing Best Management Practices on industrial forest lands & recommend improvements (Peninsular Florida)

Migration

  • Information on migration routes and ecology of STKI (BNA)

Wintering

  • Information on wintering sites in STKI (BNA)

Demographics

  • How successful (productivity) are the STKI in West Gulf Coastal Plain? (TARP - West Gulf Coastal Plain)
  • Information on the demography of STKI (BNA)

Genetics/Taxonomy/Systematics

  • Examination of the basis for present classification as related to the validity of subspecific designation (BNA)
