PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  ** (Long-term population trend monitoring considered adequate, but some issues (e.g., bias) may not be accounted for)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – NOTE:  Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides acceptable data at the continental level (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Improve the BBS (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Supplemental SPPI Surveys - Pursue Grassland Bird Monitoring, which detects more birds at more locations than BBS (Canadian Action Plan); Conduct count-based surveys of all bird species in mixed grasslands including SPPI ( Montana )
  • see needs under "Wintering"

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • see needs under "Wintering” and “Demography"

Wintering

  • Determine SPPI's wintering habitat requirements/associations ( New Mexico ; Osage Plains)
  • Improve bird and habitat monitoring on the wintering grounds (Canadian Action Plan)
  • Determine patterns of SPPI winter distribution and abundance (Osage Plains)
  • see needs under "Demography"

Invasives/Exotics/Disease/Parasites/Contaminants

  • Determine effects of exotics on grassland habitat suitability for priority species including SPPI ( Montana )

Demographics

  • Demography in relation to habitat quality and management regime, both summer and winter (Canadian Action Plan)
