RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct Mexican Breeding Bird Surveys (BBS) (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct border (U.S-Mexico) bird surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • High priority candidate for rapid status assessment (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Determine conditions that result in drastic fluctuations in RWSP population numbers (BNA)
  • Document the historic distribution of RWSP in light of El Niño events  and determine if high densities and peripheral range locations are attributable to periodic increased rainfall (BNA)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Information on RWSP Breeding Ecology - Determine if RWSP breed twice in different habitats ( Sonoran Desert & desert grassland) ( Arizona ); Information on nesting behavior (pattern of nest attentiveness, role of male, how far do young disperse?) (BNA); Define relationship between rain and breeding (BNA)
  • Information on RWSP Molt - Define relationship between breeding and molt (BNA); Clarify the molt patterns in RWSP and relate to age and to spring vs summer nesting seasons (BNA)

Effects of Human Development/Disturbance

  • Determine how urbanization affects the RWSP ( Arizona )

Landscape

  • Determine if habitat fragmentation affects RWSP ( Arizona )

Predation

  • Determine if predation is a problem for RWSP ( Arizona )

Nest Parasitism

  • Study to what extent Brown-headed Cowbird parasitism affects RWSP ( Arizona )
