RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct Mexican Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct border (U.S.-Mexican) bird surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • High priority candidate for rapid status assessment (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Supplemental RFWA Surveys - Determine the distribution of RFWA ( Arizona ); Monitor RFWA habitat trends ( Arizona
  • Determine current threats to the RFWA population (including humans) ( Arizona )
  • Determine if RFWA in Mexico and Guatemala are year-round residents or whether all individuals migrate some distance (BNA)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Information on RFWA nesting in areas other than the Mogollon Rim (BNA)
  • see needs under "Wintering”

Effects of Management Practices

  • Determine the buffer area width need to prevent impacts to RFWA ( Arizona )
  • Determine effects of fire and grazing on RFWA populations in New Mexico ( New Mexico )

Migration

  • More information on RFWA migration ecology - Determine RFWA habitat use during Spring and Fall migration ( Arizona ); Study RFWA migration ecology and habitat use ( Arizona ; BNA)

Wintering

  • Study wintering and breeding ecology of RFWA in Mexico ( Arizona ; BNA)

Genetics/Taxonomy/Systematics

  • Studies on phylogenetic relationships with other similar species (Red and Pink-headed warblers) (BNA)
