Habitat
Associations:
Brushy second growth, dry scrub, brushy ridgetops, regenerating
pine clearcuts, low pine-juniper, pine barrens, and mangroves; in
migration and winter also in a variety of woodland, second growth, and
brushy situations (AOU 1998).

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)
Monitoring
- Priority
monitoring action – NOTE: Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides
acceptable data at the continental level (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
- Second
priority monitoring action – Improve the BBS (PIF Monitoring Needs
doc)
- Supplemental
PRAW Surveys
– Develop supplemental monitoring programs to track regional
population trends (Mid Atlantic Ridge & Valley); Develop
monitoring programs for priority species occurring at Important Bird
Areas including PRAW (Allegheny Plateau); Status and habitat needs for
priority early successional species including PRAW (TARP - West Gulf
Coastal Plain; Edwards Plateau); Inventory to identify areas with
large breeding populations of PRAW (Ohio Hills)
- Regularly
update assessment of Canadian population of PRAW (Canadian Action
Plan); Compare 2001-05 Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas when complete to
1981-85 atlas to determine if status has changed (Canadian Action
Plan)
- Inventory
of existing shrub habitat to identify important sites for PRAW (Mid
Atlantic Piedmont)
- see
needs under "Habitat Needs …"
Habitat
Needs/Ecology/Life History
- Determine
range of suitable habitats & identify present breeding sites for
PRAW (Mid Atlantic Ridge & Valley)
- Molecular
analysis of paternity in light of complex & diverse mating system
of PRAW (BNA)
- Relationship
between female reproductive success and breeding site fidelity in
subsequent year (BNA)
- Information
on patterns of breeding site fidelity and dispersal of surviving males
(BNA)
Effects
of Management Practices
- Effects
of Silvicultural Practices Influence of clearcut size on breeding birds
incl PRAW (MidAtl CP - 94); influence of site prep techniques,
stocking levels, and other silvicultural practices on breeding birds
incl PRAW (MidAtl CP - 95); Economic/wildlife tradeoffs in open-canopy
management (MidAtl CP - 97); Influence of stocking rates, time to
first commericial thin, and time to final harvest on wildlife value of
pine plantations (MidAtl CP - 98)
- Comparisons
of various natural and managed habitats - Compare breeding densities, nesting success,
& habitat suitability for PRAW in early successional habitats w/
natural disturbance, forestry practices, & power line
rights-of-way (
S New England
; Ohio Hills; Mid Atlantic Ridge & Valley; Lower Great Lakes
Plain; Allegheny Plateau; Northern Ridge & Valley)
- Develop
best management practices for utility rights-of-way (Mid Atlantic
Piedmont)
- Develop
specific recommendations about burning regimes for maintaining
suitable habitat (Lower Great Lakes Plain; Northern Ridge &
Valley; Allegheny Plateau)
Landscape
- Determine
the relationship between patch size & nesting success (
Southern New England
)
Species
Interactions
- Effects
of woodcock habitat management on breeding density & nesting
success of WIFL (
Southern New England
; Lower Great Lakes Plains; Northern Ridge & Valley; Allegheny
Plateau)
Nest
Parasitism
- Effects
of cowbird parasitism - Determine effects of cowbird parasitism on the Florida PRAW
(Peninsular Florida); Monitor effects of cowbird parasitism on PRAW
reproductive success (
Southern New England
)
Wintering
- Long-term
studies of wintering PRAW populations (segregation by sex and age
class geographically, by habitat, or by feeding ecology) (BNA)
Genetics/Taxonomy/Systematics
- Comparative
information on D. d. paludicula
(coastal mangroves of
Florida
), to compare w/ migratory populations and for conservation purposes
(BNA)
