RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)
Monitoring
- Priority
monitoring action – NOTE: Breeding
Bird Survey (BBS) provides acceptable data at the continental level (PIF
Monitoring Needs doc)
- Second
priority monitoring action – Improve the BBS (PIF Monitoring Needs
doc)
- Third
priority monitoring action – Conduct new winter surveys (PIF
Monitoring Needs doc)
- Study
population status and trends for PIJAs (
Nevada
)
- Determine
amount and location of mature pinyon-juniper woodlands in
Arizona
(
Arizona
)
- Research
on populations other than those at the southern edge of their range;
how different habitat types influence life history parameters (BNA)
Habitat
Needs/Ecology/Life History
- Social
system of PIJA - why some individuals help & others don't, why
some breed in 1st year and other don't, why some disperse and some
don't, individual & kin recogition (BNA)
Effects
of Management Practices
- Effects
of conversion of pinyon-juniper woodland on PIJA & associated
species (BNA)
Landscape
- Determine
the effects of fragmentation, isolation and other landscape level
effects on the productivity of PIJAs (
Arizona
)
- Study
the relationship between PIJAs and the pinyon-juniper landscape (
Nevada
)
Species
Interactions
- Testing
the effectiveness of using PIJA as an umbrella species for managing
pinyon- juniper avian communities (
New Mexico
)
- Role
of insects & rodents as competitors with PIJA for pinyon seeds
(BNA)
- Coevolutionary
relationship between PIJA and pinyon pines - influence of PIJA
harvesting on seed size & production schedules (BNA)
Predation
- Determine
if Common Raven nest predation is a serious problem for PIJAs (
Arizona
)
