BNA No. 398 (Lowther et al. 1999)
Distribution:
Breeds from se New Mexico, n Texas, w and c Oklahoma, w-c Kansas, s
Missouri, and sw Tennessee south to s Chihuahua, n Coahuila, s Texas, and
s Louisiana, and east along the Gulf coast to s Alabama (locally in the
Apalachicola region of w Florida); and from c South Carolina and se North
Carolina south, primarily on barrier islands and the adjacent mainland
coast, to c Florida. Winters

through Cuba, Jamaica, and Middle America (both slopes) to w Panama (east
to western Panama province), casually north to s Arizona and w and s Texas
(AOU 1998).
Habitat
Associations:
Partly open situations with dense brush and scattered trees,
riparian thickets, and weedy and shrubby areas; in migration and winter, a
variety of open weedy, gassy and scrub habitats, and in open woodland (AOU
1998).

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)
Monitoring
- Priority
monitoring action – NOTE: Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides
acceptable data at continental level (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
- Second
priority monitoring action – Improve the BBS (PIF Monitoring Needs
doc)
- Supplemental
PABU Surveys
- Initiate citizen science programs to monitor eastern PABU in
South Carolina
(South Atlantic Coastal Plain); Determine distribution, abundance
& status of PABU (TARP - Chihuahuan Desert & Mexican Mts)
- Studies
of both western & eastern populations of PABU (BNA)
- see
needs under "Landscape"
Habitat
Needs/Ecology/Life History
- Better
understanding of PABU habitat requirements - PABU habitat requirements in NM (New Mexico);
Determine habitat requirements of PABU in northern Florida (Peninsular
Florida); Status and
habitat needs for priority early successional species including PABU
(TARP - West Gulf Coastal Plains & Edwards Plateau); Better
understanding of habitat requirements on breeding, wintering &
molt staging areas used by western populations of PABU (BNA)
- Breeding
biology of PABU (density, habitat selection, cowbird parasitism, nest
success, and annual productivity) (TARP - statewide)
- Comparisons
of breeding success in natural & disturbed habitats (BNA)
- see
needs under "Landscape"
Effects
of Management Practices
- Relationships
between land management practices and breeding densities of PABU (TARP
- Oaks & Prairies)
- Determine
effects of wild-caught caged song bird trade in US (
Florida
), Latin America, and
Caribbean
Landscape
- What
landscape, land use, and habitat features are associated with
distribution & abundance of PABU? (Osage Plains)
Nest
Parasitism
- Comparisons
of PABU responses to cowbirds in west (long exposure) and east
(recently exposed) to assist in management (BNA)
Wintering
- Study
winter survival of PABU - assess threats in southern
Florida
, include banding to determine source of wintering birds (Subtropical
Florida)
- see
needs under "Genetics/Taxonomy" and “Habitat Needs …”
Demographics
- What
factors influence PABU reproductive success? (Osage Plains)
Genetics/Taxonomy/Systematics
- Genetic
studies of eastern & western pops to determine if the 2
populations are separate species & if they maintain allopatric
winter areas (BNA)
