RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)
Monitoring
- Priority
monitoring action – Conduct arctic surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs
doc)
- Second
priority monitoring action – Improve the Christmas Bird Count (CBC);
(similar) Evaluate quality of Christmas Bird Count for monitoring HASP
and compare with feeder count trends and other data on status to
confirm or refute decline; update CBC analysis (Canadian Action Plan)
- Investigate
causes of HASP population declines if confirmed (Canadian Action Plan)
- See
needs under “Wintering”
Migration
- Habitat
selection and factors affecting local HASP populations on migration
routes (Canadian Action Plan)
Wintering
- Habitat
selection/associations and factors affecting local HASP populations on
wintering grounds (Canadian Action Plan; Osage Plains)
- Develop
more information on winter ecology of HASP (Canadian Action Plan)
- Determine
patterns of distribution and abundance (Osage Plains)
