PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  Mo2 (BBS trends have very low precision)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct species-specific surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc); (similar) Better monitoring of GRVI populations throughout its breeding range (BNA)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct new winter surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • High priority candidate for rapid status assessment (PIF Monitoring Needs doc); (similar) More information on GRVI Population Status/Trends - Population status and trend information for GRVI in New Mexico ( New Mexico ); Need more information about population trends in most of its range (BNA)
  • Distribution of GRVI Habitat - Determine amount and location of mature pinyon-juniper woodlands in Arizona ( Arizona ); Survey historic sites in California for GRVI presence ( California )
  • More information on distribution/abundance/natural history of GRVI - Distribution and natural history of GRVI (Arizona); Distribution and abundance of GRVI (TARP - Chihuahuan Desert & Mexican Mts); Complete additional surveys & bird atlases to get more detailed information on distribution & abundance of GRVI (California)
  • see needs in "Habitat Needs/Ecology"

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • More information on GRVI habitat needs - GRVI habitat requirements (Arizona); Determine natural fire regime/interval in successful Gray Vireo breeding areas (Arizona); Study habitat selection and population viability for GRVI (Nevada); Habitat needs of GRVI (TARP - Chihuahuan Desert & Mexican Mts)
  • More information on GRVI Natural History - More information on aspects of breeding biology (BNA); Information on vocalizations and role of female song (BNA)

Effects of Management Practices

  • Effects of fire and grazing on GRVI habitat in New Mexico ( New Mexico )
  • see needs in "Habitat Needs/Ecology"

Species Interactions

  • Testing the effectiveness of using Pinyon Jay as an umbrella species for managing pinyon juniper avian communities including GRVI ( New Mexico )

Predation

  • See needs under “Nest Parasitism” and “Demographics”

Nest Parasitism

  • Effects of cowbird parasitism on birds in pinyon-juniper habitats including GRVI ( Colorado ; Arizona )
  • Identify conditions that lead to excessive parasitism, predation, and failure in nesting of pinyon-juniper birds including GRVI ( Colorado )
  • see needs under "Demographics”

Wintering

  • Find GRVI Wintering Grounds - Locate the wintering grounds of birds breeding in e Colorado, e New Mexico, w Texas and adjacent Mexico (BNA); Determine where California populations of GRVI winter using genetic methods or banding (California)
  • Winter Ecology - Compare winter diets of birds in Sonora and sw Arizona to those in w Texas and c Mexico (BNA); In w Texas males predominate on winter territories; where are the females? (BNA)

Invasives/Exotics/Disease/Parasites/Contaminants

  • Determine effects of ecto- and endo-parasites on fitness and survival of GRVI (BNA)

Demographics

  • GRVI Nesting Success - Nesting success of GRVI (TARP - Edwards' Plateau); Study nest success & factors that may limit reproduction, especially brood parasitism and predation ( California )

Genetics/Taxonomy/Systematics

  • Assess role of genetic divergence between eastern & western populations (BNA)
