RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)
Monitoring
- Priority
monitoring action – Conduct species-specific surveys (PIF Monitoring
Needs doc); (similar) Better monitoring of GRVI populations throughout
its breeding range (BNA)
- Second
priority monitoring action – Conduct new winter surveys (PIF
Monitoring Needs doc)
- High
priority candidate for rapid status assessment (PIF Monitoring Needs
doc); (similar) More information on GRVI Population Status/Trends
- Population status and trend information for GRVI in
New Mexico
(
New Mexico
); Need more information about population trends in most of its range
(BNA)
- Distribution
of GRVI Habitat
- Determine amount and location of mature pinyon-juniper woodlands in
Arizona
(
Arizona
); Survey historic sites in
California
for GRVI presence (
California
)
- More
information on distribution/abundance/natural history of GRVI
- Distribution and natural history of GRVI (Arizona); Distribution and
abundance of GRVI (TARP - Chihuahuan Desert & Mexican Mts);
Complete additional surveys & bird atlases to get more detailed
information on distribution & abundance of GRVI (California)

needs in "Habitat Needs/Ecology"

Interactions
- Testing
the effectiveness of using Pinyon Jay as an umbrella species for
managing pinyon juniper avian communities including GRVI (

conditions that lead to excessive parasitism, predation, and failure
in nesting of pinyon-juniper birds including GRVI (
Colorado
)
- see
needs under "Demographics”
Wintering
- Find
GRVI Wintering Grounds
- Locate the wintering grounds of birds breeding in e Colorado, e New
Mexico, w Texas and adjacent Mexico (BNA); Determine where California
populations of GRVI winter using genetic methods or banding
(California)
- Winter
Ecology

Texas
males predominate on winter territories; where are the females? (BNA)
