Distribution:  Breeds in c Texas from Dallas County s to Edwards Plateau; winters in highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and n-c Nicaragua (AOU 1998)

Habitat Associations: Breeds - mixed oak-juniper woodland, often mixed w/ ash, maple, sycamores and other deciduous trees; winters - montane pine and pine-oak association (AOU 1998)

Source(s) of Research/monitoring Needs:  Texas Avian Research Projects- TARP (Texas Partners in Flight 2001); BNA No. 420 (Ladd and Gass 1999); PIF Monitoring Needs document (Partners in Flight Science Committee 2004)

PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  Mo1 (Essentially no data on population trend)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

NOTE:  See Recovery Plan for additional research/monitoring needs

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct species-specific surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Develop a conservative estimate of GCWA population size (TARP - Edwards Plateau )
  • Identify current and optimum distribution of protected habitats for GCWA (BNA)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • What are the differences in habitat use by GCWA in various parts of its range? (TARP - Edwards Plateau )
  • Further studies of ecology/behavior (including foraging behavior & prey species, movements w/in populations and during postbreeding, distribution in relation to productivity) (BNA)
  • Habitat needs on breeding grounds (BNA)

Effects of Management Practices

  • How does browsing on oak-juniper woodlands affect the long-term viability of habitat for GCWA?  (TARP - Edwards Plateau )

Effects of Human Development/Disturbance

  • Predict habitat for GCWA in 10, 20, 50, and 100 years based on predicted human population growth & development in c. TX (TARP - Edwards Plateau )
  • What is the effect of hiking and/or biking trails on nesting GCWA?  Tolerance limits?  Trail width?  (TARP - Edwards Plateau )
  • Effects of urbanization on GCWA (BNA)

Landscape

  • Effects of habitat fragmentation on GCWA (BNA)

Predation

  • Effects of predators on GCWA (BNA)

Nest Parasitism

  • Effects of nest parasites on GCWA (BNA)

Migration

  • GCWA biology, behavior and habitat needs during migration (BNA)

Wintering

  • GCWA biology, behavior, and habitat needs on winter grounds (BNA)
  • What are the threats to GCWA on its wintering ground?  Is habitat being destroyed there at a similar rate to its U.S. breeding habitat? (TARP - Edwards Plateau )

Demographics

  • Research on population biology (survivorship, dispersal, reproductive success, population sizes needed to maintain viability, gene flow between populations) (BNA)
