Flammulated Owl

Common Name:  Flammulated Owl (FLOW)

Scientific Name:  Otus flammeolus

Global/Continental Conservation Status:  Not on IUCN 2004 Red List

National-level Conservation Status:  Canada - Species at Risk Act (SARA) – Species of Concern; U.S. – Bird of Conservation Concern

Key Reference(s):  BNA No. 93 (McCallum 1994)

Distribution:  Breeds locally from s-c British Columbia (Kamloops, Penticton), c Washington, e Oregon, s Idaho, w Montana and n-c Colorado south to s-c California (Palomar Mountain), s Arizona, s New Mexico, and w Texas (Guadalupe, Chisos, and probably, David mountains); also in Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, México (Chimalpa), and Veracruz (Las Vigas). Winters from c Mexico (Sinaloa, Jalisco, Michoacán and Distrito Federal) south in the highlands to Guatemala and El Salvador , casually north to s California (AOU 1998).

Habitat Associations:  Montane forest, primarily open ponderosa pine association, occasionally aspen; in migration, wooded area in lowlands and mountains (upper Subtropical and  Temperate zones) (AOU 1998).

PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  Mo1 (Essentially no data on population trend)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct U.S. nocturnal surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc); (similar) Conduct nocturnal bird surveys in all habitats as needed to monitor priority species including FLOW ( Montana ); Use standardized owl-monitoring protocol to follow trends (Canadian Action Plan)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct Mexican nocturnal surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Third priority monitoring action – Conduct migration monitoring (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • High priority candidate for rapid status assessment (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Supplemental FLOW Surveys - Thorough inventory of FLOW distribution in Blue and Northern Glaciated Mts (Oregon/Washington);  Determine presence and distribution of FLOW in MT ( Montana );  More information on distribution & abundance of FLOW in CA ( California ); Determine population status and ecology of FLOW in NM ( New Mexico )
  • Identify FLOW nesting areas - Nocturnal surveys needed to locate nesting localities ( California ); Survey nesting FLOW in NV ( Nevada )
  • Habitat surveys - Inventory of size, location and condition of old-growth stands of Douglas-fir/ponderosa pine on drier, lower elevation sites (focus species including FLOW) ( Montana ); Survey other suitable habitat to determine full extent of range in British Columbia (Canadian Action Plan)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Study FLOW nesting ecology and habitat use (Oregon/Washington)

Effects of Management Practices

  • General management questions - Identify treatment conditions that attract FLOW (Oregon/Washington); Effects of habitat management and spatial patterns on demography of FLOW (Canadian Action Plan)
  • Effects of silvicultural practices (controlled burns, thinning) on FLOW (BNA)
  • Value of nest boxes - Determine if nest boxes will be useful as a management tool for FLOW (BNA); Study factors leading to acceptance of nest boxes (Canadian Action Plan)

Migration

  • Identify migration corridors of FLOW ( California )

Wintering

  • Delineate range and study ecology of species in wintering area (Canadian Action Plan)
  • Virtually nothing is published on winter behavior & range of FLOW (BNA)

Demographics

  • see needs under "Effects of Management Practices"
