Habitat Associations:  Barren, rocky, or grassy areas and cliffs among glaciers or beyond timberline; in migration and winter also in open situations, fields, cultivated lands, brushy areas, and around human habitation (AOU 1998).

Source(s) of Research/monitoring Needs:  Colorado Bird Conservation Plan, New Mexico Bird Conservation Plan; BNA No. 536 (Johnson et al. 2000); PIF Monitoring Needs document (Partners in Flight Science Committee 2004)

PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  Mo2 (BBS trends have very low precision)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring – Develop/implement Protocols

  • Priority monitoring action – Conduct high elevation surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc); (similar) Develop techniques and protocols for monitoring BCRF ( Colorado )
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct new winter surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • High priority candidate for rapid status assessment (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Document population size and breeding of BCRFs in New Mexico ( New Mexico )
  • Identify factors that regulate/limit BCRF population levels ( Colorado ; BNA)
  • Determine if the declining population trend shown in the Christmas Bird Count data is real. What is the cause? (BNA)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Investigate seasonal movements and habitat needs of BCRFs ( Colorado )
  • Information on breeding biology (time and place of pairing, nesting dates, sites, clutch sizes, success rates, diet of young, growth in young, nest site fidelity, annual and lifetime reproductive success, timing & sequence of molt (BNA)

Migration

  • Determine whether there is differential migration between the sexes in BCRF (BNA)

Demographics

  • What is the sex ratio of BCRF? Does it change with age class? Is there a floating population of nonbreeding males? (BNA)

Genetics/Taxonomy/Systematics

  • Is BCRF genetically monogamous? (BNA)
