Baird's Sparrow

Common Name:  Baird's Sparrow (BAIS)

Scientific Name:  Ammodramus bairdii

Global/Continental Conservation Status:  Not on IUCN 2004 Red List

National-level Conservation Status:  U.S. – Bird of Conservation Concern

Key Reference(s):  BNA No. 638 (Green et al. 2002); USFWS Species Status Assessment (Jones and Green 1998); USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center document (Dechant et al. 2003)

Distribution:  Breeds from s Alberta , s Saskatchewan , and s Manitoba south to c and e Montana , n South Dakota , and se North Dakota .  Winters from se Arizona , s New Mexico (casually), and the high-plains grasslands of Trans-Pecos Texas south to n Sonora , Durango , Chihuahua , and Coahuila (AOU 1998).

Habitat Associations:  Short-grass prairie with scattered low bushes and matted vegetation; in migration and winter also in open grasslands and overgrown fields (AOU 1998).

Source(s) of Research/monitoring Needs:  Arizona Bird Conservation Plan; Montana Bird Conservation Plan; New Mexico Bird Conservation Plan; Canadian Action Plan (Dunn 2002); Texas Avian Research Projects- TARP (Texas Partners in Flight 2001); BNA No. 638 (Green et al. 2002); PIF Monitoring Needs document (Partners in Flight Science Committee 2004)

PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  ** (Long-term population trend monitoring considered adequate, but some issues (e.g., bias) may not be accounted for)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – NOTE:  Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides acceptable data at the continental level (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Improve the BBS (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Supplemental BAIS Surveys - Pursue Grassland Bird Monitoring including BAIS if pilot study results are positive (Canadian Action Plan); Conduct count-based surveys of all bird species, including priority species (like BAIS) in mixed grasslands (Montana); Conduct an inventory of BAIS wintering areas ( Arizona ); Improve BAIS bird and habitat monitoring on the wintering grounds (Canadian Action Plan)

Habitat Needs/Ecology/Life History

  • Determine patch size requirements for BAIS (in winter) ( Arizona )
  • Studies of vocalization in BAIS (song development, acquisition, song-type function, female recognition) (BNA)
  • see needs under "Wintering" and "Demographics"

Effects of Management Practices

  • Determine the responses of BAIS to different management techniques (in winter) ( Arizona )
  • Examine reproductive success of BAIS in native grasslands and various categories of non-native grasslands (demographics, seasonal food abundance, vegetative characteristics & wet and dry summers) (BNA)
  • see needs under "Demographics"

Landscape

  • see needs under “Demographics”

Wintering

  • Winter distribution - Study the winter range/distribution of BAIS ( Mexico & southwest U.S. ) ( Arizona ; BNA)
  • Winter  Habitat Needs – Determine state-specific habitat requirements for wintering BAIS (New Mexico; Arizona); Determine if the unfragmented grasslands around Marfa, TX are important to wintering BAIS (TARP); Winter habits, habitat conditions (additional studies in Mexico and SW U.S. to determine habitats used, responses to land management, behavior, site fidelity) (BNA)
  • See needs under “Habitat Needs…”, “Effects of Management Practices” and "Monitoring"

Invasives/Exotics/Disease/Parasites/Contaminants

  • Determine effects of exotics on grassland habitat suitability for priority species including BAIS ( Montana )

Demographics

  • Demographic responses to habitat - Study the reproductive success of BAIS in different habitats i.e. native and non-native grasslands and cropland ( Arizona ); Demography in relation to habitat quality and management regime for both breeding and winter (Canadian Action Plan)
  • Information on BAIS breeding biology & demographics (What kinds of temporal & spatial variation exist in nesting success? Effects of landscape on demography?) (BNA)
