PIF Continental Plan Monitoring Needs Category:  Mo2 (BBS trends have very low precision)

RESEARCH/MONITORING NEEDS (source(s) of needs)

Monitoring

  • Priority monitoring action – Improve the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Second priority monitoring action – Conduct new winter surveys (PIF Monitoring Needs doc)
  • Additional/Supplemental BACS Surveys - Develop supplemental monitoring programs to determine regional population levels & trends (Mid Atlantic Piedmont); Rangewide survey for BACS is needed (TARP - West Gulf Coastal Plain)
  • Conduct a status survey of BACS and an assessment of management techniques to improve nesting habitat for this species in the oak glades of the Gus Engeling WMA (TARP - West Gulf Coastal Plain)
  • Identify large blocks of pine barrens for conservation action for BACS (Mid Atlantic Piedmont)

Effects of Management Practices

  • Effects of silvicultural practices on BACS - Influence of site preparation techniques, stocking levels, clearcut size, timing, harvest technique, and other silvicultural practices on breeding bird communities (Mid Atlantic Coastal Plain); influence of stocking rates, time to commercial thinning, & time to final timber harvest on wildlife values (Mid Atlantic Plain); examine economic/wildlife tradeoffs in open canopy management (Mid Atlantic Coastal Plain); current status, distribution, nesting ecology, and nesting success of BACS in relation to forest management practices (TARP - West Gulf Coastal Plain)
  • Effects of chemical & mechanical treatments on bird habitat (including BACS) (Interior Low Plateau and Northern Cumberland Plateau )
  • Effects of prescribed burning on breeding & wintering birds of prairie habitats (including BACS) (Peninsular Florida)
  • see needs in "Monitoring"

Habitat Restoration

  • Determine influence of habitat restoration on colonization & breeding success of BACS (Mid Atlantic Piedmont)
