Arizona Woodpecker

 

Common Name:  Arizona Woodpecker (ARWO)   (split from Strickland's Woodpecker – Picoides stricklandi)

Scientific Name:  Picoides arizonae  

Global/Continental Conservation Status:  NOT on the IUCN 2004 Red List

National-level Conservation Status:  Nothing other than coverage under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act

Key Reference(s):  BNA No. 474 (Johnson et al. 1999) (written before the split between P. arizonae and P. stricklandi) assume research needs still appropriate

Distribution:  Resident [arizonae group] from s Arizona and sw New Mexico (Peloncillo and Animas mountains) south in the Sierra Madre Occidental to Jalisco and n and e-c Michoacán.  (AOU 1998 – also written before the split).

Habitat Associations:  Pine-Oak Forest, primarily in oak [arizonae group] (1250 – 4200 m; upper Subtropical and Temperate zones) (AOU 1998).
